teaming up for children. Join in!
Artists will transform large blank aluminum alloy butterfly
sculptures into a work of art that will support local school arts programs in Colorado Springs School
District Eleven.
The 3rd Annual Butterflies and Friends is a community service initiative
led by The Rotary Club of Colorado
Springs to raise awareness and funding to ensure that children receive
essential arts programs with the educational benefits that promote
brain development, social skills, improved communication and effective
learning.
Last year, 2009, West Elementary and
West
Junior High
School
received approximately $18,000 for their arts programs as result of
the Butterfly event. The year before, 2008, Queen Palmer Elementary
received $20,000 for renovations to a multi-purpose room and
additional funding for their arts program.
The two recipient school The Bijou School and James Monroe Elementary
School are led by Principals Kathryn Presnal and Marlys Berg,
respectively. Princpal Presnal and her staff at The Bijou School offer
students a different way of learning and completing their high school
education. They provide small classes with a friendly, welcoming
environment. Bijou offers a standards-based program that provides a
solid foundation upon which students can build promising futures. The
staff at Bijou has high expectations for their students and work with
each one to create an individual plan for a successful educational
experience. This ensures that each student who receives a Bijou diploma
is well-prepared to transition into the next phase of their life,
regardless of the path they choose. The Bijou staff encourages their
students to make good academic and personal choices that will maximize
opportunities for success after graduation.
Principal Berg and the James Monroe
Elementary School staff work diligently to meet district and state
standards and have invested heavily in staff development to promote
student achievement. Monroe Elementary prepares students to effectively
communicate, gather and use information, make precise decisions, and
adapt to the challenges of the future. Principal Berg and her staff
support this mission through enthusiastic commitment to lifelong
learning in an environment that provides not only for academic needs,
but also for the social, physical and emotional needs of their students.
